Lloyds laboratory Rub Resistance Tester is a tool for comparing the rubbing, scuffing and marking of inks and coatings on commercial print and packaging. It can be used as a part of quality control in a production environment or an aid to development in the laboratory.

Modern papers and carton boards can prove a challenge for inks and coatings. Harsh substrates such as matt paper and recycled board are prone to marking, scuffing and rubbing during post print production and transportation.

The Ink Rub Resistance Tester is designed to determine the quality of adhesion, and scuff resistance of ink to paper surfaces, plastic and aluminium film. The motorised unit is simple to operate by entering the number of rubs in the preset counter and starting the unit. It will rub the sample until the pre-set value is achieved. Dry and Wet rub can beperformed on the Ink Rub Resistance Tester.

The method of operation is that a 2 or 4 Lb weight with a clean white board is swept across the test piece for a set number of times, then closely examined.

The Ink Water Emulsification Tester of the dampening solution to the ink surface on the plate and ink form rollers is inherent in the printing process and the major weakness of lithography.

 

If dampening solution, revolution by revolution, accumulates on the ink surfaces, it will interfere with and eventually prevent the critical ink transfer. This dampening solution can only be removed by emulsification into the ink. 

 

Therefore, lithography depends on the ink’s ability to emulsify the dampening solution which during the process, is unavoidably applied to the plate surface. The medium which is printed on the substrate is not the ink as was applied to the press but an emulsion of aqueous dampening solution in the continuous hydrophobic phase.

Ink Flow Spreadometer are used to measure the comparative flow rates of liquids or paste over time. A very popular test in offset ink to evaluate the ink rheology and body with varied ink raw materials used. The spread meter is one of the methods for measuring fluidity of lithography and letterpress printing inks. This instrument is used to determine " spread " of ink. Test principle: a certain amount of ink is placed between two parallel plates, to deform the ink by the dead weight of the plates. Along with time elapsed, the ink spreads in a circular shape. With the increase of the circular area, the pressure applied on the ink decreases. After a certain length of time, the diameter of the spread ink is measured. Yield value is determined from the ink spreading speed.
